presentations to the board of education superintendent report. superintendent carranza your thoughts for the evening. >> great thank you president yee. ladies and gentlemen and all of our parents listening at home. i wish you a good evening. thank you for being here in the board room. just a few thoughts to share with you. we are coming upon a very special election in the next few weeks and people will have an opportunity to vote and as you're deciding on candidates and ballot measures to vote for i would like to draw your attention to proposition 30 and 38. with the understanding that if these prop propositions pass they have significant impact on funding. if neither one passes financial resources will be greatly diminished for schools in california and specifically here in san francisco. the lodge cuts include that we will be forced to shorten the school year by five days this year and nine days next year in addition to the substantial cuts that will be at school sites and for students. i want to encourage all of you to vote in the election. vo

in education, my kids go to some of the best public schools in america. my parents are both former teachers. and i think the american education system is incredibly strong and needs to be supported. but what we know is that they're still racial disparities that we need to work on. we have enormous differences in how we fund schools in this country. if you look in texas, for example, there's a three to four ratio and the wealthiest schools get in with the poor schools get. we also know 43% of title i schools are underfunded and one in six americans are not in school working. i went out we are failing kids in texas. texas has, for exam will, the last decade in the growth of a number of kids, texas has 50% of that. texas flashier cut education spending by over $5 billion. and so, my parents live in texas. schools in texas have over 40 kids in the classroom and that is not a success. their school systems to have completely eliminated extracurricular duties. no spores, no debate, no drama, no art could because of the lack of funding. and that is something as a

we want more latinos to go out and vote and be educated on the issues that are occurring. it starts at home. i think that i remember growing up i was sitting around the table, my dad was a political prisoner in cuba he would talk about importance of freedom of democracy i felt that that was sort of took my charge to go out there and get involved and learn the issues and basically what i've been doing so long. we need more of that, the more of the parents being more engaged with the issues and talking about these important issues for the latino community. what is interesting, we've seen such a rise of conservative hispanics such as senator marco rubio and so many of these that have come out really that even for them they have been able to talk about the message of why it's important to get involved and why it's important for hispanics to vote. we are seeing it in florida where you are going to see i think a lot more active hispanics going out to vote. it's interesting to see how california and texas are just not going down that direction. although we have senatorial candida

so, it's something that if you wanted to look specifically at education, you could look at the education recommendations and see what was done or not done. we created subcommittees within that and the subcommittees each came up with their own goals. and, so, the education subcommittee, i'll just tell you really quickly, they wanted more academic support funding. they wanted more round credit recovery, develop an outreach database around academicses and education to really look at not just what the city funds, but what else is out there, what are the resources that could be availed to folks. and then there are some other ones that again, you can look at those and see what that looks like. this summer they started a human rights commission initiated a brown bag series. again, understanding that it's not just about the school district, it's not just about home, but the importance of networking and making connections and having a context. when we start talking to people about the importance of school and education, if we have generations of folks who have maybe not graduated from high school
